we got to cal poly in 5 hours and upon registering we were ready to rip it up that mile long hike! the bungalows were all intact and the wheels worked perfectly (after a little tinkering with). we made it up to the top of hill in about an hour which was wayyy faster than most projects. although we took all day to set up, everything went up flawlessly and according to plan. day one was wrapping up and we were really excited about the judging tomorrow.
night one was a very calm sleep until about 5 am the next morning when it seemed like a hurricane was ripping through the canyon. i woke up to the loud sound of wind and the horror that the structure would break in some way before judging. however, i was confident in our design and the craft that we put into the structure and it held up beautifully. i checked outside at some point that morning and saw that a lot of the projects were hit with some form of devastation and noticed that our structure was one of only a few that stayed strong.
after having breakfast we put the roof up in all the different levels to showcase our concept of control and the luxury that the user would experience by moving the roof to its desired height. judging commenced all throughout the day while visitors were also allowed to walk around and experience all of the structures. we had quite a few people get really excited at our use of crutches and walkers. when we looked back on the competition we were very satisfied in our intentions of the project. we felt as though we were one of the few projects that really adhered to the competitions goals of reusing items that would be found in a landfill.
overall the competition was an unbelievable experience that i will definitely never forget. not only did i have a blast at the actual competition but i learned so much about architecture. it really showed me that architecture is more than just drawings on paper, it is the creation of spaces and forms. to see my little napkin sketch turn into a structure to be entered into a credible competition was an unbelievable feeling. our group set out to take back an award and although we didnt we were given great feedback from viewers and and overall liking of our structure and its elements.
