a little scare happened last thursday when a broken pipe at margaret's house allowed a good quantity of water to settle onto my computer. leaving it open to do a virus scan, water was able to spread all over the screen and seap into the keyboard. upon realizing what happened i immediately turned the laptop over and for more than 24 hours i had fans blowing on it in order to dry it off. to my luck the laptop made it, along with all of my work/programs. although i wasnt able to type an (,) or capital "I"
My name is Matt Evans and I am currently a third year student at Newschool of Architecture + Design in San Diego, California, getting my undergraduate bachelors degree in architecture (B. Arch). This blog is intended to display my design work, both school related and personal projects, along with all of its processes in hopes of receiving feedback from followers in order to increase my skills as a designer and prospective architect.

coming soon
progress on our newest assignment will be posted as soon as i get a chance. as a teaser ill just let you know that we are designing a "healing center" using non-western traditions. the site is located in the area of convoy in san diego, which is a heavily asian influenced community. i am therefore given the privilege to research japanese and chinese architecture which is something i have always wanted to do and cannot wait to start reading more about. also, the project entails me having to collaborate with 3 other students for the design. we are basically representing 4 separate architecture firms coming together to design a single project. stay tuned!!
natinal assembly hall
the national assembly hall is located in dhaka, bangladesh. designed when the country was at a time of governmental uncertainty, the building untied the feuding people and united them under one roof. the assembly hall is massive in size and is made out of mainly exposed concrete.
evident in most of kahns buildings, the national assembly hall responds immensely to the surrounding culture. one of the noticeable characteristics of the structure is the marble bands that run vertically and horizontally across the structure. these bands run at increments of 5 feet for one main reason: kahn realized that in a day, the people of bangladesh could only pour five feet of concrete. without the bands, the structure would show the different levels of the concrete pours and the building would look unsatisfactorily constructed. the bands accomplish two things: 1) they establish a human proportion to the entire structure, and 2) they hide the imperfections of incremental concrete pours.
the main objective of the project was to focus on how the building is put together. from a single screw all the way to conjoining concrete walls, we were to understand and diagram how these structures were physically built. because my structure was finished almost 30 years ago, there was not as much specific information on the structural details as many of the other students had with recently completed projects. because of this, i was required to use my knowledge and conduct even more research as to how my building was constructed. although my drawings might not have been 100% accurate, i did learn a lot about how such a massive concrete structure would be erected and for this i am grateful.
i used a wooden formwork to pour the plaster to create the mold of my section cut (it was really messy because i had to pour in such a small crevice)
after the pour came out successfully, i set up a makeshift work bench in the garage to dremel the sides down to clear up any imperfections from the pouring
the model came out pretty successful as i was only showing one of the bays in order to signify the main structural elements incorporated (scale: 3/16" = 1'-0")

update!
alright so just wanted to give an update as to where i am at right now. i am currently finishing up a project which is due today. we were to research a precedent study and from that make drawings on mylar along with a scale model showing how the building envelope/skin function and are put together. i had the opportunity to research the National Assembly Building in Dahka, Bangladesh, and it was designed by Louis Kahn. stay posted for pictures and descriptions from the project after today.
p.s. we were given our next project already and had a site visit on friday to the area of convoy in SD. our site will be the home to a nonwestern "healing" center and it is a group project. stay posted for that as well
